11 and 13 are justified by the urgent necessity for increased
latrine accommodation which has been dwelt upon in the report
by Mr.Drury forwarded in Sir .A. Blake's despatch No.22 of
the 19th.January 1900.
5. Item No.3 is the balance of an Estimate
of $25,000 of which $18,000 was spent last year in extending
the road from Hok. Un to (and beyond) Kowloon City in the New
Territory.
The beginning of this road is mentioned
among projected works in the Estimates for 1899, and its con-
struction: became urgent on the acquisition of the New Territory
By the sale of Crown Land abutting upon
it it has already proved itself a remunerative work.
6. Item No.4 was rendered necessary by the
opening of a Police Station close to the distant village of
Sha Tau Kok at Starling Inlet.
7. Items Nos. .Sand 6 are in connection with
the road to Tai Po,the estimate for which for the current year was not made larger for the reason stated in the Governor's
despatch already referred to.
58. Item No.7 is a work the urgency of which is
due to the fact that the former rifle range hitherto used
by the Police and Volunteers at Kowloon is not safe for the
use of the new Carbines with which both forces are now arned,
and it is necessary to provide a new range as soon as possible
in substitution of the old one. The Police will use the new
Volunteer range.
