Sir,

Enclosure to

Public Works Department,

· dongkong, 16th. May, 1900.

I have the honour to accept the appointment

of Government Engineer at Gibraltar offered me in 0.0.D.101 of

· 1900 and to thank the Right Honourable the Secretary of State for the promotion.

As an answer was desired by telegraph I have had to decide without further enquiry as to any allowances which may attach to the office; these appear to be "forage" allowance, and in the case of the officers who have recently discharged the duties of the appointment "free quarters.

#

It has been impossible for me to obtain any definite. information as to the cost of living in Gibraltar, but from what I can learn houses are very difficult to obtain. and rents are proportionately high. It appears too that the majority of the heads of Departments are provided with free quarters or a house allowance,

I therefore respectfully request the favourable consideration of the Right Honourable the Secretary of State to my application for a continuance of the "forage"allowance and for some allowance on account of the high rentals.

I have etc,

(Sd.)J.R.Crook.

donourable R.D.Ormsby,

Director of Public Works.
