The May, 1900..
sir,
In reply to your despatch No.90 of the
30th. of March last, I have the honour to transmit for your
consideration the enclosed copy of a Memorandum drawn up by
the Director of Public Works showing how the Engineers in che
: Public Works Department are employed, and so state that in my
opinion the important works in connection with the extension
of the storage reservoirs at Tytam could not be properly
supervised except by a special staff resident on the spot
and that ro Engineer or Overseer can be spared for this special
: work.
J
I venture further to express the
opinion that the needs of this rapidly growing Colony are so
.numerous in the matter of Public Works that to keep pace
.wich urgently required work che Staff of the Public Works
* Department- is likely to require still further re-inforcement
in the near future.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.,

I have the honour to be,
sir,
Your most Obedient,
Humble Bervant,
My Gascope
