Wich reference to your despatch No.261 of

che 3180. of October last I have the honour to inform you

chat Sir A.Blake endeavoured to effect an exchange of the

/ Gap Rock -Lighthouse, which is in Chinese Territory, for Waglan

#Lighthouse so as to avoid the expense of maintaining both,

but that che. Chinese Government were unable to consent to

the proposal' owing to the difficulty and inconvenience con-

:nected with the up-keep of the Gap Rock Light.

2. In these circumstances I have intimated

to the Chinese Government that the Colonial Government will

I take over the Waglan Lighthouse and apparatus on the 1st.of

January 1901.

The annual cost maintaining che Light

↑ (inclusive of the expenses of the Steam Tender) is estimated

at $4,104 in salaries and 84,550 in Stores ele: making a to-

: cal or $8,604 for which provision will be made in the Esti-

mabes for 1901.

3. The Light at Cape D'Aguilar has owing to

* the proximity of the Waglan Light been discontinued since

· March 1896.

It has been suggested by Captain Rumsey

that the Green Island and Cape Collinson Lights should be

: improved by transferring the Cape D'Aguilar Light to Green
