Sir,

I have the honour to acknowledge the

receipt of your despatch No.21 of the 34th. January enclosing copy of correspondence with Mr.W.Stanton relative to his retirement from the HongKong Police Force.

2. In accordance with the instructions

contained in paragraph 2 of your despatch, I have caused lir.

Stanton's papers to be amended as directed, and transmit herewith a revised pension paper for transmission to him.

Fresh pension papers have likewise been furnished

to Messrs. Quincey and Baker.

3. I also enclose copy of the Police

Regulations asked for in the third paragraph of your despatch.

With regard to the good conduct medal of which

Mr.Stanton was deprived in consequence of the circumstances which led to his retirement, I am advised that Mr.Stanton

has no legal claim to its return.

In October 1898 Mr.Stanton made an application in

the Colony for the return of his medal, and Major-General

Black, at that time Administering the Government, under

the power conferr d by section 3 of Ordinance 22 of 1895

declined to restore the medal.

With regard to paragraph 4 of your

despatch I have to state that the copy filed for record of
