that expenditure during the next 4 months.
That is the minimum period of time within which the Deputy Land Officer, under whose direction the party will work, estimates that the work can be done.
You will observe by the above figures that no provision has been made for any extra emolument to Messrs. Grey and Watson for their work on the survey, which will be very arduous, and as they are both married officers with households to maintain in Hong-Kong, their constant absence on the main- land in the discharge of their new duties will entail upon them very considerable expense,
In view of the desirability of pushing on this survey for Rent Roll purposes as rapidly as possible, it has been suggested to pay these officers an honorarium each on the completion of their work rather than a fixed increase to their salaries, and I would ask your sanction to calculate these ho- noraria at the rate of $50 a month for each officer if the
work is completed before the end of the year.
