It is impossible to define the exact perio

of immunization. Probably about twelve months, possibly

much longer. It depends entirely upon the nature of the

inoculation, and the constitution of the animal operated

upon.

Three methods of inoculation for rinder-

pest have been tried with success in South Africa.

A.

Bile inoculation, which will give a long

immunity but in this case it is first necessary to obtain

the bile from an animal which was died of the disease.

B.

A method by which animals are rendered

immune by inoculating them simultaneously with serum and

virulent blood, but in this case it is difficult to deter-

mine the exact quantities of blood and serum which it is

necessary to inject to bring about the desired effect.

C.

The serum method alone, which has shown

good results. This is more of a preventive measure, and

does not cause the animal to become sick as a result of

the operation.
