With reference to your letter No. 15 of the 16th. ultimo, I am directed by the Governor to request you to be good enough to convey His Excellency's thanks to His Excellency the Viceroy for seming To Tai Lin Ho Tung and Captain Lui Wen Ching
to Hongkong to discuss the question of co-operation between the British Naval Authorities and the Chinese Authorities for the
suppression of piracy on the West River.
At the request of the Governor, the British Amirel
deputed Commodore Powell and Captain Slade to confer with Tao Tei
Lin and Captain Lui, ani the Governor himself had the pleasure of
receiving the Chinese Officers referred to.
As a result of the conference with the Naval Authorities
here, Captain Slade has, under instructions from Admiral Say-
mour, proceeded to the West River to make a personal inspection
of the river and of the creeks that branch off it with r vier
to submitting detailed recommendations for combined action is
suppressing piracy.
As soon as Captain Slade's report is received it will
be forwarded for the consideration of the Viceroy.

I am to take this opportunity of mentioning that the
Governor learnt with considerable surprise and regret that Tao Tai
Lin left Hongkong without attending the final interview which
been previously arranged for between the British and Chinese
Officials although Tro Tei Lin had given his personal assurance
that he would attend the Meeting.
