At present, St. Joseph's College consists of a European
Division and a Chinese Division.
In both of these English is taught ; but in the European
Division, there are very few Chinese boys, perhaps three
Jouer
or in each class, whilst the Chinese Division which gives
躞
instruction only as far as the IVth. Standard, is attended
exclusively by Chinese. The few Chinese boys who wish to
'continue their studies above the 1V-th. Standard, enter
the European Division to complete their education. The
Chinese Division until this year occupied two rooms on the ground floor of a building in the
}
compound of the Roman Catholic Cathedral, and the teachers
were Chinese, Last year the number of pupils presented for
the examination was 34 and in 1897,35. But owing to the de
mand among the Chinese for an education in English, the
presure on the accommodation in the European Division was
so great that the Manager decided to enlarge and improve
the Chinese Division and place it in charge of three of the
Christian Brothers. This was done at the commencement of
the year. The Orphans who occupied the top floor of the
building were removed, and the whole building was turned
into School-rooms. At the annual examination last year,
there were presented 87 Chinese who had been taught by
three European masters and two Chinese Assistants, The
only gain in school accommodation effected by the additions
to St. Joseph's College is as I shall now shew the top floor
of the building occupied by the Chinese Division.
The accompanying tracing shews the
changes in the actual building of St. Joseph's College. The
building consists of one block. The central portion was
originally of three storeys, the two wings of two. The
addition consists in raising the two wings one storey.
