With reference to my telegrams of the 24th.

December and 3rd. January, and to yours of 26th. December and 5th.

January I have the honour to inform you that the vote of

$50,000 from the public funds of this Colony towards the

Lord Mayor's Fund in connection with the war in South Africa,

was unanimously agreed to at the meeting of the Legislative

Council held on the 15th.ultimo.

2. I attach for your information an extract

from the press account of the proceedings at that meeting.

From the speeches made on that occasion it will be seen that

the public spirit shown by the whole of Her Majesty's subjects

in HongKong, irrespective of race, was fully represented by the

Unofficial members of the Legislative Council, by whom the

grant of this sum of money was originally proposed.
