sir,
I have the honour to acknowledge the re-
ceipt of your despatch No.39 of the 9th.ultimo, and to inform
you that the consequences of the reversal of the position of
the buildings of the New Law Courts pointed out in Messrs.
Ashton and Webb's letter which formed an enclosure in your
despatch were fully realised here, and it was considered not-
withstanding that the principal offices in the buildings
should face the East.
I decided therefore to adhere to the opi-
nion of the Committee which, as stated in my despatch No. 368
of the 29th.of December I had appointed to consider the plans
of the buildings, and accordingly I telegraphed to you on the
28th.instant as follows:-
* Referring to your despatch No.39 of 9th.February
opinion unchanged respecting reversal".

JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.
