and 8 years had to be provided for, and as I found it impossible to secure another house at a rental within my means was compelled to give up housekeeping and sell my furniture in order to send my wife, as well as my three Children to England as I could not afford to rent a house at a high figure and keep my wife here as well as send my Children home to School.
6.
Comparative Appointments. I know
offho post in any other Colony of a similar nature to the one I hold. The only appointments with which I can compare
my own being the Assessor of Railways and Canals in Scotland and the Rating Surveyors to the large Railway Companies in England.
7. Conclusion. In conclusion I beg to state that my work is of the most trying nature to health, necessitating
most
the frequent visiting in all sorts of weather
of the insanitary part of the City of Victoria and the Colony, and the spending of a large portion of my time in the unhealthy surroundings amongst which the poorer classes of the Community live,. During my service here I
have suffered from several severe, and frequent slight,
attacks of Fever, most probably arising from the above
causes, and it is only on account of a naturally robust
constitution that I have been enabled to continue at my
post without a break down.
In praying for His Excellency the
Governor's favourable consideration of my application
I would most respectfully ask thatmy office may be
classified with those in class (b) in the Despatch No 280
dated
