Sir,

I have the honour to inform you that I find it no longer possible for me to keep pace with the ever increasing registration and other work of the Land Office, and to recom- mend that an Asistant Land Officer, with a practical knowledge of conveyancing be appointed to the Land Office as soon as

possible.

2.

It is now upwards of 17 years since I came out to take charge of this office, and from that time to the present the average daily work has almost trebled.

5.

In December 1897 the extra pressure of registration work made itself felt, and was only kept under by working at night. At this time it was not exactly known whether the work was abriormal or occasioned by the natural growth of the Colony; but, since that date the work has gone on increasing an is now too great, even with night work, for one registration Officer, with much other work to do.

4.

The following statistics will, I trust, shew the increase of the Colony and Revenue, so far as the work of the Land Office is concerned, and the justification of the trained assistance I now recomment.

5.

when

In 1882 I took charge, there were 18 books kept, for

A registration of Titles; now there are 42 books, of 6200 folios

including the registers of titles to sections of Lots.
