I have the honour to address you on the subject

of the urgent necessity of additional European assistance in the Land Office not only to cope with the large increase of work consequent upon the acquisition of the New Territory (which will further increase as soon as the proposed Land Court begins to authorise the issue of titles for land in the New Territory) but to meet the increase that has taken place in recent years owing to the rapid growth of the Colony and the consequent large transactions in landed property.

2. I enclose copy of a letter from the Deputy

Land Officer in which are given various statistics to prove

the increase in work that has taken place through the develop- ment of the Colony since Mr.Bruce Shepherd first took charge of the Land Office in 1883.

3. I have personally satisfied myself that trained European assistance is urgently required for this ex- tremely important work, with the volume of which it is impos- sible for one officer any longer to cope. I should here point out that although the Registrar of the Supreme Court is also
