Public Works Office,
Hongkong, 11th January, 1900.
I have the honour to forward for the consideration of Government copy of a memorandum from Mr. Crook, Executive Engineer in charge of Waterworks. I agree with him that additional staff will be necessary in connection with the proposed extension of storage reservoirs in Tai Tan Valley.
The additional reservoir, with which we hope to make a commencement this year is estimated to cost $60,000.
Within a few years it will certainly have to be followed by the two other works projected by Mr. Cooper, estimated to cost $140,000 and $56,000 respectively, so that the engagement for three years of a special officer and a European Overseer would be amply justified. If considered advisable, the salaries of these officers might be included in the Estimates for the works rather than added to the establishment.
The Honourable
The Colonial Secretary.
I have etc.,
(Sd) R.D. Ormsby,
Director of Public Works.
