Six months ago I called the attention of the Government to the prevalence of cases of Beriberi in serious numbers. In October I again had to make reference to it, and I regret to say that the disease still continues in our midst. This quarter's returns are the worst we have yet had, and in addition bodies are now brought on suspicion of having died from plague which on examination prove to be Beriberi. The rapidity of the course of the disease in many cases is very great at present, and nearly all cases are in the acute stage when admitted. The remedy for the present state of affairs cannot be spoken of with much hope or successful application.
Plague has fortunately not broken out in any serious form yet.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
(Signed) James A. Lowson,
Inspecting Medical Officer.
