During the quarter the new incinerator has been completed and has been working so far in a most satisfactory manner.
A new roof, which has been badly wanted for some time, has been put on the receiving ward.
From table A it will be seen that 50 plague cases and 37 other cases were admitted moribund thus largely accounting for the very high mortality of the hospital for the quarter. The 54 deaths from Respiratory disease were almost all advanced cases of Phthisis, which has been increasing year by year since I first called attention to the question of Tuberculosis in Hong Kong in the year 1894, a matter which has evidently escaped serious attention since that time. What else can one expect in Hong Kong now with our overcrowded parts of the city and the expectorating habits of the Chinese?
I have to call the attention of His Excellency the Governor to the prevalence of Beriberi in the Colony. During the quarter 60 cases have been admitted here, of which 16 have been imported the remainder having occurred locally. The death rate in the disease is apparently small it is due to the fact that a considerable number leave the hospital, if they are able to reach their own country "often, I am afraid, to die. All the imported cases are brought to Hospital, so that the number of local cases shows that the Island of Hong Kong is well infected with Beriberi. Some thorough investigation seems
