from the 1st January last, but with regard to the other higher posts in the Department I see no reason for reconsidering the salaries approved in para. of my Despatch, Indian Govt. to be at least as liberal as those recommended by Mr Ormond.
I approve of the salary of Draughtsman, fixed at $1200 a year, as proposed by Mr Ormond. The salary of Chief Draughtsman may be fixed at $1800 a year.
I am prepared to approve the proposal that Mr Gale be appointed Assistant Engineer instead of Chief Draughtsman, as mentioned in Mr Ormond's despatch, and the Draughtsman appointed in his place may receive a salary of $1200 rising to $1800 by triennial increments of $300.
If the higher rate has not already been promised to the officer selected for the post.
I shall leave to your discretion the question of whether the increases in salary which Mr Ormond proposes to allow to certain Junior Officials of the Dept. should or should not be adopted.
