After due consideration it was decided that the building should be leased and that the Registrar General's department should be removed from the Supreme Court Building and accommodated on one of the floors; the remaining floor, suitable for offices, being devoted to the Sanitary and Education Departments.
By removing the Registrar General's Department, it became possible to accommodate the Crown Solicitor and Attorney General in the Supreme Court Building, an arrangement obviously conducive to the conduct of their duties.
The removal was further of benefit from the Registrar General's point of view, as the duties of that officer are now combined with those of the Colonial Secretary and the removal brought the respective Departments into much closer proximity than formerly;
The extra accommodation required for the Registrar General's and Sanitary Departments was also obtained and those Departments for which Government buildings were not available were concentrated under one roof.
The period of the lease is 3 years commencing from the 14 January 1898, with the option reserved to Government to renew the lease for a further period of years on the same terms. The rental is $425 per month.
