The Petition of John Holt, of 203 Great Ancoats Street,
Manchester, late Sergeant in the Police Force Hong Kong.
Most respectfully sheweth:-
1. That for four years prior to the 23rd August 1886,
your petitioner served in the Royal Artillery, and on the day
mentioned he while holding the rank of a Non-commissioned
Officer, purchased his discharge in Hong Kong, and left the
Army with a very good character, in order to join the Police
Force of that Colony.
2. Your petitioner was promoted to the rank of Acting
Sergeant in July 1891 and 1893 was appointed to the detective
department in which he served until dismissed under the cir-
cumstances hereinafter mentioned on the 23rd of August 1897.
3. On the 21st of June 1897 the Honourable J. H. Kay C.M.G.
Captain Superintendent of Police acting on information receiv-
ed went to house No 3 East Street, and arrested certain persons
and seized money and jewellery and certain account books and
papers, which latter were supposed to have reference to
illegal gambling carried on at No 2 Wah Lane.

Amongst the persons arrested was one Sham In, who was
subsequently sentenced to nine months imprisonment, with hard
