EXCHEQUER AND AUDIT DEPARTMENT,
SOMERSET HOUSE,
LONDON, WC2
17 AUG 39
16th August,
Sir:-
I am directed by the Comptroller and Auditor General
to transmit, for the information of the Secretary of State, copy of a letter received from the Local Auditor of Hong Kong on the subject of an overpayment by that Colony on account of the transit of mails to India during 1895 and 1896.
2. It will be observed that, although a portion of the total amount so overpaid has been recovered from the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co., there remains a sum of $962 overcharged against Hong Kong funds.
I am to enquire whether the circumstances of this overpayment have been brought to the notice of the Secretary of State, and whether the compromise referred to by Mr Nicolle has been sanctioned.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your obedient servant
A Lennon Woods.
The Under Secretary of State,
COLONIAL OFFICE.
