Sir,

I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to

acknowledge the receipt of your secret letter No.23740 A

of the 6th instant, transmitting a copy of Memorandum No.

195 M. by the Colonial Defence Committee, on the Reports of

the General Officer Commanding, and of the Commandant, on

the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps, for the season 1898-99.

In reply, I am to state that Lord Lansdowne approves

of the Memorandum, and concurs in Mr.Chamberlain's

suggestion to communicate copies to the Governor of the

Colony.
