Sir,
I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to
acknowledge the receipt of your secret letter No.20447/98 of
November
the 19th instant, transmitting a copy of a memorandum by the Colonial Defence Committee on the Reports of the General Officer Commanding and of the Commandant, on the Hong Kong Volunteer Corps, for the year ending April 16th, 1898.
In reply, I am to state that the Marquis of Lansdowne approves of the Memorandum, and concurs in Mr. Chamberlain's suggestion to communicate copies to the Governor of the Colony.
