The time actually taken to do their work by the

Quarantine Authorities was 1 hour 35 minutes;

the

total delay incurred by the steamer was two hours and

forty-five minutes.

Now, I wish to add some remarks by way of

criticism.

This criticism I have already made to

the President of the Board (Dr. Fuffer). The examination was done with combined carefulness and speed.

I do not think it could be done much quicker, nor do

I believe that any case of plague could have been

overlooked.

But with regard to the disinfection,

it is either too much or not enough. There were

from forty-one of a crew nine bags containing dirty

linen or rather soiled underclothing.

Several of

the men had only the clothes in which they stood, so

that their belongings were not disinfected at all.
