TREASURY CHAMBERS,

21

October 1899

Sir,

In reply to Mr Lucas's letter of the 9th instant (26759) stating that a telegram has been received

from the Government of Hong Kong, asking for the early

supply of copper cents to the amount of $10,000 for the

use of the Colony, I am directed by the Lords Commissioners

of Her Majesty's Treasury to request that you will inform

Mr Secretary Chamberlain that, in view of the great pressure of coinage demands which have to be met by the

end of the current calendar year, the Royal Mint would not be able to undertake this coinage until next year.

My Lords regret, therefore, that, if the need

be urgent, it will be necessary for the Colony to make other

arrangements for the supply of the coin required.

I am,

Sir.

Your obedient servant,

E.W. Hamilton

Under Secretary of State

Colonial Office.
