REC Rea 27 JUN

Banstead Asylum, Near Sutton,

Surrey.

23rd June 1899.

Re Hong Kong Regn. 1004 Appts.

Gentlemen,

I have endeavoured without success to find you a suitable candidate here and I have also sent round to the Authorities at the Claybury, Cane Hill, Colney Hatch and Hanwell Asylums, but there is no candidate to be found at any of these Asylums.

If I might venture to make a suggestion I think that there would be more chance if the age was raised from 30 to 35 years, and if Rations were provided as well as "Quarters". Asylum wages in England are so much better than they were that men will not go abroad unless there is a considerable pecuniary advantage in it.

I have little doubt that an advertisement would bring in a good candidate.

With much regret that my efforts have been unavailing.

I am,

etc.

(Signed) T. Claye Shaw.
