Freights: For New York via Suez the S.S. Moyune clears today with about 950 tons at 30/. Mail rates remain at 1 cent gold per lb. to Overland points. To London via Suez, Conference owners have raised rates to 50/ per ton, a form of encouraging trade between England and China that is hereby appreciated by their supporters on this side who are quite aware that any well-managed line should pay its shareholders a handsome dividend at 35/ per ton if steamers can be chartered to show a profit at 30/ per ton from China to New York; the exaction of 50/ per ton on cargo from China to London is assuredly a strange way of developing Anglo-China trade.
