provision can be made for her support, in case she is returned as suggested at the expense of the Government of Hong Kong, is one which can be answered only by the competent authorities at San Francisco."

The Colonial Government will remember that, at a time shortly after my arrival in this Colony, I had a search made in the Office of the County Clerk of San Francisco to try and establish the identity of this woman. It was without result. I do not believe it will be of any use to take the matter up with the San Francisco authorities, as they will briefly answer that they are now supporting dozens of aliens in the Insane and Poor Asylums, and are perfectly willing that one of their subjects should be supported by a Foreign Government. As it is, there is absolutely no proof that the woman is an American, while we know that she did come here from Australia via Singapore.

The Honourable Colonial Secretary, Hong Kong.

I have &c.

(Signed.) Rounsevelle Wildman, Consul General.
