Samshui, November 13th, 1899.

Lieut Commander Carr, of Her Majesty's Ship Sandpiper, being at present engaged in conveying to a place of safety certain salt junks which have been detained by pirates for the last three weeks at Tai-ping-chau, on the West River, some 15 miles below Samshui. I write to inform you that the river-steamer "Cheong Kong" owned by the Kwong-Wah Steamboat Company (a British Company registered in Hong Kong) but flying the Chinese flag, was pirated yesterday evening about 6 o'clock at a place between Kunchuk and Kongmoon, called Ho-tong, (5 miles above Chu Toi Shan, the notorious pirate haunt). The pirates having secured the Cheong-kong, no resistance as usual being made by the Chinese crew; used
