I have the honour to acknowledge

the receipt of your despatch No.324 of the

14th November last, enclosing a copy of the

Report of the Committee which you appointed

to enquire into the Salaries of Chinese

Government employees, and recommending that

their salaries should be increased somewhat

on the lines indicated in the Committee's

Report.

2. In my telegram of the 14th instant

I informed you that I approved the scheme

for increasing the salaries of the Chinese

in the Government service, submitted in

Major-General Black's despatch No.271 of the

22nd September 1898, except as regards the

salaries of Post Office employees, which had

already been increased in accordance with my despatch No.152 of the 20th July last.
