No.292.
C.O. 172

RECEIVED Pre 24 NOV 19
Government House, Hong Kong, 20th October, 1899.
Sir,
In continuation of my despatch No.225 of the 16th August, I have the honour to inform you that the Legislative Council has passed a vote of $2,100 for the purchase of the building on the old site of the Mortuary at Kennedy Town.
I am of opinion that the Tung Wa Hospital are fairly entitled to compensation for their compulsory removal from the old building, and the Sanitary Board has reported that it will be of some use to Government as an inspection lair and a quarantine station for dogs, in respect of which there is at present no accommodation.
In these circumstances I have therefore to request your sanction for this expenditure.
The Right Honourable JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.
