the officers of the Hong Kong Regiment that the salary and allowances recommended in his minute (viz., $3,600 per annum plus exchange compensation, free quarters, $360 per annum for chair coolies, and forage for one pony) would tempt a gazetted officer of the Punjab Police, especially in view of the fact that service in this Colony would, in view of the political situation in China, be looked upon as affording a good opening for a young man.

5. In the above circumstances I have to ask your sanction to take steps with a view to endeavouring to obtain the services of a Police Officer from India.

With reference to the last paragraph of your despatch, I have addressed you on the subject of the Police requirements of the New Territory in my despatch No.251 of 1st September.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient

Humble Servant,

Stewart Aislabie

GOVERNOR, &C.
