Subsequent Paper: 31450

Sir R. Herbert.

In 8120 Med General Black recommended the appointment of an Assistant Superintendent of Police at a salary of $1800. The O.A.G suggested that the salary required should be $2400, and in that Despatch it was stated that the officer should, if appointed, be required to learn Hindustani as well as Chinese.

The question was shelved until Sir H. Stakes in para 3 of 170411, while recommending that the Police Department should be relieved of part of their Prison duties by the appointment of a Deputy Superintendent of the Gaol, thought that the Assistant Superintendent of Police need not at present be appointed.

Meanwhile, on 12517, we approved of the appointment of Mr Hallifax as Assistant Superintendent of Police for the new Territory at a salary of $2400.

Later on, the Gov's recommended (20822) that another Assistant Superintendent of Police be appointed, and Mr Maddox was appointed to that position as an Assistant Superintendent was the latest to have been appointed Police Magistrate, obtaining an acting half-share of the Territory.

It is now a matter of consideration.
