POLICE. The territorial extension of the Colony accounts for the large increase in the estimated expenditure of this Department. Full details of the increased staff required for the New Territory will be found in Governor's Despatch No.182 of 18th July, 1899. The new scheme for the augmentation and reconstruction of the Water Police has also been duly reported and approved. (Conf.Xl.) C.O.D.156 of 1899.
VICTORIA GAOL. The reason for the increase in the cost of this sub-department will be seen on reference to C.O.D. No.108 of 1899.
SANITARY BOARD. The increase in the estimated cost of this department is owing to the fact that the lowest tender received for the important work of scavenging the streets of the city is greater by $12,000 than the former estimate. This increase arises partly from the area of the city having become larger, and partly from the rise in the wages of coolies.
MISCELLANEOUS SERVICES. The chief increase under this head is that of printing, the estimate for which is larger by $10,000. The estimate for the present year was found to be considerably lower than was necessary, owing to the large increase.
