The total estimated Expenditure for 1900 is $3,216,418.00 as compared with the revised estimate for 1899 of $3,057,971.80.
COLONIAL SECRETARY'S DEPARTMENT The increase here is owing to the appointment of 2 new cadets, and to the appointment of the additional staff - already reported in Governor's Despatch No.205 of 31st July, 1899, the members of which have been performing their duties since the taking over of the New Territory. It is impossible at this early stage of the administration of the New Territory to know exactly what permanent staff will be required. It has therefore been deemed advisable only to make temporary appointments until it becomes clear what permanent appointments are really necessary to carry on the work of administration in the new area. In order, however, to provide for any contingencies in connection with the administration of that part of the Colony, a sum of $10,000 has been inserted under the head of miscellaneous services.
