to and in response to this invitation, three designs were sent in early in 1898.
5. Before these had been adjudicated upon, the Jubilee Committee received from the Government a letter of the Principal Civil Medical Officer's, proposing that Craigieburn at the Peak should be purchased for the Hospital and that the idea of building in the ground of the Civil Hospital should be abandoned. The letter, a copy of which I enclose, contains some forcible arguments in support of the proposed transfer of the Hospital to the Peak District.
6. The Committee carefully considered this suggestion, and, whilst deciding almost unanimously against the purchase of Craigieburn, resolved that a site should, if possible, be selected for the Hospital on the higher levels.
7. An Executive Committee was appointed to deal with the matter and has now succeeded in elaborating a practicable scheme. That scheme I desire to submit for Your Excellency's consideration before referring it to the General Committee, so that I may be in a position to state whether the Government are prepared to take over the Hospital on its completion.
