The existing Customs quarters at Sha Tin were not formerly occupied by Europeans, and are not fit for such occupation, while those at Cheung Chau are so unhealthy that the Customs Authorities themselves contemplated removing from them had they retained occupation of the island.
Permanent buildings are in course of erection at Tai Po, Un Long (Au Tau) and Ping Shan, and seven other stations will have to be built if my recommendations are approved.
8. I attach a statement of the cost of the Police establishment for the New Territory detailed above, together with a statement, shewing the expenditure incurred to date in connection with the policing of the New Territory, and of the additional expenditure that will be incurred during the current year.
