It has been usual for us to obtain assistance from the Clerks of the Assessor when the general Valuation is over. I am unable to say how their time is occupied during the slack work season, but I have no doubt that their duties have increased in recent years.

You will doubtless remember that I informed you not long ago that the amount of work in this office has considerably increased and that in order to cope with the increased duties the clerks have to work beyond the usual office hours in order to prevent arrears accumulating.

I beg leave to invite your attention to the Report of the Retrenchment Commission. The Committee was informed that the staff recommended by the Treasurer was on a purely experimental basis, and in considering this, they recommended for the collection of Revenue, one clerk for Crown Rent and Taxes assisted by four more, whereas we have now only one clerk with practically
