Sir,
Enclosure

Treasury,
11th August, 1899.
63

I have the honour to state for His Excellency's information that it is now necessary to appoint an additional clerk to assist in the work of the Treasury, and I attach reports by Treasury Officers showing the increase of their work in recent years.

The Revenue in 1894 was under $2,300,000 whereas that in 1898 was over $2,900,000 and this year it may be expected to be about $3,200,000.

Again, the Suitors Fund work was added to the Treasury after the present establishment was fixed, involving receipts and payments, mostly in small amounts to a total of about $400,000 per annum.

For these reasons I beg to recommend the appointment of an additional clerk at a salary of $480 rising to $780 by increments of $60 yearly.

The Honourable
The Colonial Secretary.
