and interrogating the inmates would be able to obtain reliable

information as to diseased women, for the following reasons:-

1. The Chinese when they are ill have a strong objection to consult any body other than a Chinese Doctor; in this

they differ from the inhabitants of Ceylon and India where

Lady Doctors have been employed, in that the natives of these

places will come for treatment by European Doctors, whereas the

Chinese will not

2. These prostitutes when they are suffering from

Primary Syphilis do not know that they are diseased, they look

upon a primary chancre in the same light as they would look

upon a sore on their finger, they have no knowledge of the

constitutional trouble which will follow this sore, hence they

would not complain of it, very often they are ignorant even of

its presence.

Our experience has been that they have no objection

to examination by medical men and when taken to hospital, although

frightened at first, from their innate aversion to the foreigner,

after a few hours stay they have no objection to remaining,

indeed they appear quite contented.
