F (516 It is hoped the average cost per mile of completed road will not exceed $10,000. The first section to Sha-tin will probably be 8 miles in length, the second to Taipo 7 miles, and the third to the Sam Chun river 9 miles more, or 24 in all. It is hoped that the road may be completed to Taipo in 1900, but if funds are available, it might be also commenced at the northern boundary under a separate contract and quicker progress made. At present rate of progress, about $80,000 will be required in 1900.
