headman of that place is in friendly terms with us who are to thwart the people up to beg him to keep the people there in order

By this I send you the Copy of a pamphlet (with a rough translation) which was put up in the market place near Thonglak. We can trace the origin of this inflammatory pamphlet. The drift of it is the same as the speeches of the penduate (楊喜春) by which he instigated the people to kill the Christians there. Happily the Christians are in friendly terms with the headmen of the place, always calling this stupid penduate to order

But he is a dangerous man. Last the headman of the market Thonglate told the Christians they had better leave because they can't protect them longer. This pamphlet, long be Chum in Thonglate should certainly be called to order by the Chinese Government. In ordinary times there is not much to be feared by the issue of such stupid pamphlets; foul productions of the litterati are very dangerous

I shall always inform you about all that is going on in the Hinterland. All missionaries are thankful that the British Government will render help, whenever we should be in very perilous positions everywhere as soon as this real danger should be the case. I would write to him
