The trade of Amoy consists chiefly if brought over from Tamsui in Cormorant. The merchants are all British with one exception and all the merchants with the exception of one English firm.
The Taotai informed me during a conversation of the following facts which I give nearly as possible in his own words as they were translated & noted.

China and Great Britain have been firm friends and British trade in China is very peaceful. I as Taotai of this port, desire to protect the trade of this country. To do this I must make arrangements to protect the place and to be able to protect their country is to be able to protect the trade of your country. We have a Chamber of Commerce in Amoy for protecting trade. It is not confined to the protection of native trade but must protect foreign trade as well.
