Mr. Pereira is a very hard working and intelligent assistant, and I will be very sorry indeed, if at any time I have to lose his service; you know how extremely difficult it is to get a good Post Office assistant, who has not only to do the work of the office but also of Money Orders Department. I am of opinion that it will be impossible to get any clerk in Shanghai to do the work of Mr. Pereira, as well as he does, for his present salary, and I think that it is in the interest of this Department to retain the services of Mr. Pereira.

I remain &c.

(Signed) F. G. Machado.

Commander, C. H. Hastings, R. N.
Postmaster General,
Hong Kong.
