Dear Sir,

Enclosure.

80021 246

RECO Reef 7 AUG 19

British Post Office,

Shanghai, 21st June, 1899.

With reference to your letter to Mr. Pereira of the 13th March last No.184, regarding the refusal to increase his salary, I am extremely sorry to trouble you again on this subject, and will feel extremely obliged if you will kindly use your influence in his favour, the present salary of Mr. Pereira, $100 per month, is inadequate for the heavy work at this office in comparison with other clerks in Shanghai and also on account of high cost of living and heavy house rent.

The salary of the junior clerks on joining the Imperial Chinese Post Office is Haikuan Taels 60-$90 per month; the clerk at the French Post Office gets nearly double the salary of Mr. Pereira; also the clerk of the Japanese Post Office, and the clerk of the German Post Office gets $250 per month.

Mr. Pereira joined the service in 1882, and was transferred to this office in 1883 at $80 per month and had only one increase of $20 in 1889.

Mr. Pereira
