No. 171.

Hong Kong,

7th July, 1899.

Goverment House,

Sir,

I have the honour to transmit for your consideration the enclosed copy of a letter addressed to the Postmaster-General in this Colony by the Postmaster in charge of the Shanghai Post Office, recommending Mr. M. A. Pereira, Clerk in his office, for an increase of salary.

From the attached comparative statement of the Money Order business transacted at Shanghai in 1897-8-9, it appears that the work is increasing, and in view of Mr. Pereira's 17 years service and the increased cost of living I beg to recommend an addition of $120 per annum to his salary.

The Postmaster-General states that it would be hard to replace Mr. Pereira.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your Most Obedient

Humble Servant,

GOVERNOR &C.
