in countries paying in silver. The hardship in Mr. Wood's case
is that before he first joined, the salary was represented to
him as being equivalent at least to £400 a year by Mr. Chadwick,
who on behalf of the Crown Agents offered him the appointment.
Mr. Wood has, I understand, full authority for quoting Mr. Chad-
wick's letter to him regarding this mistake as given in paragraph
20 of his memorial for promotion in the Colony or by transfer
(C.S.O.3437 of 1896.)

The reply of the Right Honourable the Secretary of
State to Mr. Wood's last memorial, as quoted by him in this
letter, seems to imply that, although the salary attached to the
appointment could not be raised then (1898), it might at some
future time be increased. I will be glad, therefore, if His
Excellency the Governor will sanction the inclusion of $50 a
month increase from the 1st January next subject to the Secre-
tary of State's approval.
