No.
167.
Sir,
Government House,
Hong Kong,
5th July, 1899.
I have the honour to transmit to you a copy of an application from Mr. David Wood, Office Assistant and Accountant in the Public Works Department, for promotion or increase of salary, together with a copy of a covering letter from the Director of Public Works.
2. Mr. Wood's name has twice been noted for promotion in the Colonial Office, though no opportunity seems yet to have occurred.
3. In view of his eight years good service, the impossibility of any promotion in his own department or apparently elsewhere in this Colony in the near future, and the fact of an unfortunate clerical error having occurred when the appointment was offered to Mr. Wood by the Crown Agents, I recommend that he be granted an increase of $50 a month and I have to request your authority to make due provision in the Estimates for next year.
I have the honour to be,
The Right Honourable
JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.
Your Most Obedient Humble Servant,
GOVERNOR &C.
