It seems probable that it will be some little time before the villagers withdraw from Panofibras (Sham Chun).

Referring to my despatch No. 107 of 28th April. Further investigation shows that three men were murdered at time because they favoured the British. I am informed by Mr. May that the villagers in Shan Chan valley who have been friendly and supplied food etc. are terrified at the rumour that the valley is to be abandoned by the Chinese authorities and that they will be sacrificed for having helped the "barbarians". Remembering the proclamation issued by General Gascogne occupying Sham Chan, I do not consider their fears groundless.
