Sir,
I have the honour to forward to you a copy of a letter from the Superintendent of the Fire Brigade, recommending certain increases in the salaries of his staff.
2. You will observe from the contents of Mr. May's letter that it is impossible to retain the services of experienced men at the rate of pay at present obtaining.
3. The City of Victoria is rapidly extending in area, and in view of the increasing value of property it is most necessary that the efficiency of the Fire Brigade staff should be maintained. The extra expenditure only amounts to $177.50 dollars per annum.
4. The other recommendations of Mr. May are matters which can be decided locally.
I have the honour to be, Sir, Your Most Obedient Humble Servant,
Henry A. Blake
GOVERNOR, &C.
